NewsSearch: hours of research, now done in seconds.

Mediahuis publishes more than 30 independent news brands across five countries. Together we built NewsSearch, a research assistant that turns the group's vast archive into something journalists can actually talk to. It's not a search box. It finds the story, checks it against Mediahuis' own reporting, summarises it, and pitches fresh angles back to the newsroom.

Catch up’ quickly
How do you let journalists mine millions of archived articles without losing half a day to it? Mediahuis, ML6 and Google Cloud answered with NewsSearch: a fact finding assistant that searches the archive, verifies against the group's own journalism and condenses it, Research that once took up sometimes hours now lands in seconds. It went from idea to live newsroom tool in six months. And it's grounded in Mediahuis' own reporting, so what it returns can be trusted.
About Mediahuis
Founded in 2014, Mediahuis has become one of the major players in the European media landscape. The group operates across Belgium, the Netherlands, Ireland, Germany and Luxembourg, and publishes more than 30 independent news brands, including De Standaard, NRC, De Telegraaf and Irish Independent.
Alongside its titles, it runs digital marketplaces spanning real estate, jobs and recruitment, automotive and price comparison. Mediahuis is known for one thing above all: a hard commitment to independent, quality journalism. That commitment is exactly why the group went looking for AI it could trust. 2024 was a year of deliberate technological investment for Mediahuis, driven by the deeper integration of AI across the organisation and a strategic move towards a central technology platform: a shared foundation that lets the group's brands innovate faster while keeping journalism at the core. NewsSearch is that strategy made concrete. The idea came from the newsrooms themselves, championed by a team including Bart Janssens, Lisa Schetgen, Yves Van Dooren and Melle Drenthe, and backed at leadership level as a way to make the archive faster to use without compromising editorial rigour.

05Answers are grounded in Mediahuis' own articles, not the open internet.
Built to scale
06Google Cloud's infrastructure removes the scaling ceiling as more titles come online.
Challenge
Mediahuis has decades of world-class journalism in its archive. Getting to it, fast, was the problem.
Finding background for a story could take up to 30 minutes; the most complex queries took longer. In continuous news, that's untenable.
The team tested many solutions. They were either too limited or too rigid to meet the specific needs of a newsroom.
Younger journalists lacked the history and context their senior colleagues carried in their heads.
Finding a fresh angle is where a story wins or disappears, and that's slow, manual work.
Whatever the tool returned had to be verifiable against Mediahuis' own reporting, never a hallucination scraped from the web.
Solution
NewsSearch is a research assistant built on Google Cloud, pairing an Elasticsearch retrieval layer with Google's Gemini models. Elasticsearch surfaces the right articles; Gemini reads, reasons and responds. Together they turn a static archive into a colleague you can question. Each capability answers a specific newsroom pain.
Instant retrieval
Searches millions of archived articles and returns what matters in seconds, not half an hour.
Verification, not guesswork
Grounds every answer in Mediahuis' own journalism, so facts can be trusted.
On-the-spot summaries
Condenses long threads of coverage into a crisp briefing.
Biographies and timelines
Assembles the background scaffolding of a story automatically, a gift to less experienced reporters.
Open-ended by design
Handles questions well outside the initial scope; as one lead put it, the limit is the journalist's imagination.
The technology behind NewsSearch
While the interface feels like a conversation, the engineering underneath is built for scale and trust.
Google's Gemini models handle summarisation, question answering and angle generation, chosen for flexibility across unpredictable newsroom requests.
Elasticsearch identifies the most relevant articles before the model ever reasons over them, keeping answers grounded.
Responses are anchored to Mediahuis' own archive rather than the open web, the core guardrail against hallucination.
Cloud Run and App Engine run the application; Firestore handles data; Google Cloud's infrastructure removes the scaling ceiling as titles are added.
The build combined technical iteration with regular journalist feedback, moving from workshops to a live tool in six months.
Governance and editorial oversight kept the tool aligned with Mediahuis' standards for independent, trustworthy journalism.
Seamlessly integrated into the newsroom's way of working
NewsSearch was designed to sit inside how journalists already work, not to bolt on another tool they'd have to learn. It was shaped in workshops with the newsroom and refined on their feedback.
The archive as source
01Connects directly to Mediahuis' millions of archived articles across its brands.
A conversational front door
02Journalists ask in natural language and get grounded answers back, no query syntax required.
Newsroom-first design
03Search behaviour was tuned to editorial needs through repeated cycles with working journalists.
Ready to extend
04Proven in the first pilot newsrooms, now being rolled out to further publications across the group.
The time it takes to find information has been drastically reduced: what sometimes took hours is now done in seconds or minutes. Freed from tedious, time-consuming investigation, our journalists can devote more time to value-added work.

Results
Speed
Research that once ran to 30 minutes or more now returns in seconds, giving continuous newsrooms back their most scarce resource: time.
Productivity
Automated biographies, timelines and summaries let journalists focus on writing, not digging.
Responsiveness
Experienced reporters move faster; younger ones close the experience gap instantly.
Editorial edge
Suggested angles help brands stand out in a crowded news cycle.
A platform to grow on
Success in the pilot newsrooms is now driving a group-wide rollout.
When you combine a powerful language model like Gemini with a lot of content and the creativity of journalists, the only limit is the imagination of the journalist. Journalists now interact with the archive in a completely different way; an assistant does the heavy lifting, and the information can be trusted because it's based on their own articles.

The Collaboration
This was co-creation, not delivery. The idea came from Mediahuis' own newsrooms, and the build was a genuine three-way effort: Mediahuis' journalists and data team set the editorial bar, ML6 brought the AI engineering, and Google Cloud brought the models, infrastructure and the News Partnerships team's hands-on support. Workshops with working journalists shaped the tool; regular feedback refined it. Mediahuis retained ownership of the product and the roadmap, with the group now positioned to extend NewsSearch across its titles. Innovation and journalistic rigour didn't just coexist here; they reinforced each other.

We're building Mediahuis on a central technology platform with AI woven through it, so our newsrooms can move faster without ever compromising the independent journalism people trust. NewsSearch is that idea made real: technology in service of the story.
